Nabil was born in Cairo in December 1941 and qualified from Cairo University in 1964. In the early years following his qualification, he worked in Egypt as a General Practitioner followed by one year in Lebanon in paediatrics and paediatric surgery. He came to England in November 1970 and started as an SHO at Harold Wood Hospital in Essex, then as an SHO in Orthopaedic Surgery in Brighton and Portsmouth, and as a Registrar in Orthopaedic Surgery in Wigan and Wrightington Hospitals until September 1980. He was appointed as Tutor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Manchester University for one year followed by a Senior Registrar for the North West Health Authority for three years.
Nabil was appointed as a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery in Stockport in September 1985, when he introduced the low-friction arthroplasty of the hip and knee at Stockport Infirmary and neighbouring hospitals.
He was mentored by his predecessor Mr Harold Bolton, who is a past President of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand. During his time as a Senior Registrar and after appointment as a Consultant, Nabil designed a flexible external fixator (S-Quattro) for the treatment of difficult intra-articular hand fractures, chronic or neglected fracture dislocations and dislocations, as well as in the management of severe Dupuytren's contractures. By the time of his retirement from the National Health Service in December 2006, Stepping Hill Hospital was a leading centre in the North West for Hand Surgery.
Nabil sees his private patients at Ryley Mount, next to Stepping Hill Hospital, and he operates at the Alexandra Hospital in Cheadle. |
