Simon Reuben - MB ChB FRCS(Tr and Orth)

Simon was appointed in 2002 as a Consultant surgeon in orthopaedics and trauma at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust. He gained qualification in medicine in 1990 at Manchester University. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1994. The Royal College of Surgeons awarded him the Laming Evans fellowship for research in 1995. He completed his higher surgical orthopaedic training in 2002.

His areas of clinical interest are lower limb surgery of the hip and knee; limb trauma surgery, and the prevention of deep vein thrombosis following lower limb surgery.

During the consultation and physical examination he will identify the symptoms and signs of a patient's condition. Arrange blood tests, X-rays, CT scans or MRI scans as indicated. Discuss his findings with each patient and offer a personal and specific treatment plan, including the benefits and risks of the proposed procedure. This allows patients to make at an informed decision on their surgical or non-surgical treatment.

He annually performs approximately 200 arthroscopic "key-hole" knee operations. These are for a variety of conditions including anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, meniscal tears, patella mal-tracking, and sports related injuries. In addition he performs approximately 150 joint replacements of hips and knees including: total knee replacement, partial knee replacement (Oxford uni-compartmental knee, Avon patello-femoral), and total hip replacement (using cemented and un-cemented methods). For hip replacement surgery he uses digital templating of a patient's X-rays to improve accurate reproduction of hip biomechanics, which reduces the risk of leg length discrepancy as a complication. He uses the posterior approach, which reduces the risk of a limp following surgery and provides excellent exposure of the hip joint to allow precise placement of the components. Dependent upon the specific requirements of an individual patient an implant will be selected from hip resurfacing (metal on metal), hard bearing hip replacement (ceramic on ceramic or metal on metal) or traditional design hip replacement.
